Exploring The Science Of Sleep
Improving the way we sleep is tireless work. Each Casper product is designed by our team of over 40 researchers, industrial engineers, designers, mechanical engineers, and others in California, who spend their days and nights (when they’re not “playing” with CAD software and mattress testing machines) on research. Research and experimentation is at the heart of every Casper product.
Take a look under the covers to see how it comes to life:
Learning the Truth About Sleeping Positions
Back? Stomach? Side? Starfish? While conducting a camera study during the development for the Casper pillow, we learned that most people wind up in all sorts of sleeping positions during the night, no matter what position they fall asleep in. It’s the insight at the heart of the Casper pillow.
We designed the Casper pillow to be perfect for any sleeping position. In the early stages of our R&D, we slept on over 60 different kinds of pillows from around the world to find the best snoozing materials. We chose a pillow-in-a-pillow design, which helps provide support and comfort, and filled the inner core of the pillow with around a billion “memory fibers” to make one of the richest pillows we know of.
Exploring the Science of Why People Sleep Hot
“Sleeping hot” is something you have to worry about with most memory foam mattresses. But when developing the Casper, we kept heat retention at the center of our research and design. Using sensors to track temperature and humidity, we uncovered how the materials of sleep surfaces can impact the environment around you. We used these insights to design products that help keep you at the perfect temperature throughout the night.
The top layer of Casper’s foam features a breathable, open-cell design to increase circulation. It works alongside the foam underneath to pull heat away from your body and keep you cool all night long. The sheets and pillow utilize a percale weave that promote airflow.
Studying the Sleep Habits of Dogs
Even when we’re designing a mattress for dogs, we follow the same R&D process. Our design team conducted behavioral research, met with dog owners, and spoke to specialists to better understand the science behind how dogs sleep when creating the Casper dog mattress.
We learned that dogs’ behaviors around bedtime date back to century-old survival tactics. Wild dogs liked to sleep in dens and dug away at soil to get to the cooler ground beneath. They also change their positions based on their temperature. We developed 8–10 different design concepts and 20–30 different constructions of our dog mattress to meet these needs…and took it straight to the dogs. They barked, we listened.
Discovering How Couples Affect Each Other’s Sleep
In our efforts to create an even more comfortable night of sleep, we studied the relationship between our products, the humans snuggling with and under them, and the environment in the house around them. We learned that couples directly impact each other’s temperature (tug-of-war for the covers, anyone?) and movement. With these insights, we designed the Casper to sleep cool for couples and improve motion isolation — so your midnight snack will stay your secret.
