Waffle Crush Wednesday: Cafe Gitane
Ever see a crew of models walking down the street and wonder, “Where are they going?” They’re going to brunch at Cafe Gitane, of course. The NoLita “it” cafe is the place to see and be seen. It’s overflowing with fashion bloggers and European DJs. Regardless, the quaint ambience and inexpensive French-Moroccan cuisine is worth the almost guaranteed long wait. Take a table by one of the cafe’s large windows. Better yet, in the summer, sit at a table outside to partake in some prime people-watching.
The food? All the more filling as it is cute. Cafe Gitane’s crown jewel is the hearty slice of Avocado Toast, which is doused and dusted in a layer of fresh lemon juice and red pepper flakes. For dinner, try the couscous tower with hummus and vegetables. Vegetables aren’t your thing? Similar sentiments. You know where this is going…
The Orange Blossom Waffle is an inventive standout. It was not your standard thick diner waffle (the ones that leave you feeling disgustingly gorged). When you come to a French Moroccan restaurant, the portions are relatively un-American. It was a simple plate, topped with a generous portion of fresh berries and bananas. We left pleasantly satisfied. No food comas here.
