Warning: Pies-N-Thighs will fill you up. Come hungry. Leave happy. Located on Canal Street, in the heart of the Lower East Side, Pies-N-Thighs is a homey, hipster haven, serving up authentic southern cuisine. Beards, tattoos, and flannels. Pecan pie, macaroni ‘n cheese, and biscuits. Yeah, yeah, you might be crampy after the Southern staples. Pies-N-Thighs is not for the calorie-conscience.

Comfort food classics is the name.  The Chicken Biscuit put us into a deep food coma, and might be one of the most intensely unhealthy thing we’ve seen on a plate. On that note, it was delicious. The Bacon Banjo, a fried egg, cheese, and salty bacon biscuit, is a classic; it is perfectly savory and crispy from end to end. The Hippie Banjo, a cheddar, avocado, veggie, and a fried egg sandwich, was another gem we’d happily order on its own. Breakfast is not complete without a hearty slice of pie (one of Pies-N-Thighs signature dishes). Whether breakfast, lunch, or dinner, please do yourself a favor: order the macaroni and cheese.

And that brings us to the entree of the hour: the Chicken and Waffles. The fried chicken was crunchy, moist, and plenty salty under a flakey crust. It’s worth an order even if the waffles go untouched. (We would never!) The buckwheat waffles were solid: light, sweet, and complimentary. The dish was alas topped with sweet cherries, cinnamon butter, and warm maple syrup. Together, it is a perfect match.

Casper’s unofficial waffle rating: 9.1
