We arrived at Underwest Donuts hungry, excited, and a little bit confused. The tiny, almost unseen shop exists inside none other than the Westside Highway Carwash on 47th Street and 12th Avenue. Is this the right place? we thought, bewildered. But once inside the glass doors, we came face to face (literally) with a shelf display of mouthwatering cake donuts. Jackpot.

Wait, back up, you’re probably thinking. Isn’t Waffle Crush Wednesday all about waffles? Indeed—and we were here to try the insta-famous Maple Waffle glazed donut. So we ordered a dozen.

Rich, syrupy, and sweet were all we could think as we sunk our teeth into the cakey treat. These picturesque beauties had a brown sugar colored glaze, topped with walnut bits and a stroopwafel piece placed delicately on top. The perfect lovechild of a waffle and a donut.

If you’re into the idea of a full stack, but can’t deal with the commitment (i.e. you’re late to work), this donut is the perfect choice. No need for a fork and knife here, just dust off the crumbs and be on your way.

We’ll be back for the others, like the Blueberry Thyme, Halva, and our obvious favorite, the Carwash (vanilla-lavendar). If they’re anything like the Maple Waffle, we’re sure they donut disappoint.

Our Very, Very Unofficial Waffle (Donut) Rating: 8.7
